Today's mission was to obtain 2/4 (first come first serve) Kingyo's Assorted Deluxe Bento Box! According to their menu this is "The King of Lunch!" What makes this bento kind of fun to have is that they only serve 10 per day! So with reservations + a race for those who arrive first and order... I decided to take up the challenge and went 30 mins early and tried my luck today when I landed in Vancouver, with my friend Howard!
This place was quite lovely, the feel was antique-y, homey and cozy. I really enjoyed the vibe of the spot and it was so lovely to have been the first ones in line and be seated. Heads up for individuals who's never been here, I recommend making reservations because the people flow of this restaurant is quite steady and a line up seems to be a normal occurrence aswell. The waitress I spoke with suggested to call and reserve the bento box min 5 days ahead just to ensure one!
To begin after our ambitious early arrival we celebrated with drinks to start! Nothing quite like day drinking especially with my first day on my mini dance-cation! I've been obsessed with anything 'lychee' related so I when I saw "Fresh Lychee Gray ($8.50) - craft lychee liqueur, pink grapefruit" - I knew that was mine. While my friend opt for the Mango Calpico Soda ($6).
Deluxe Bento Box ($18):
The presentation of this bento was gorgeous! The small dishes included: Salmon, tamago, chicken karaage, pumpkin salad, fried oyster, braised tender pork, tuna tataki, pickled veggies, soy sauce veggies, tofu and rice!
For the price x portion ratio, this bento was very beautifully curated. There wasn't any items in the box which I didn't enjoy, they each had their little touch of detail in each dish, which made them unique on their own. My favourites was their Agedashi tofu, braised pork, pumpkin salad & herbed miso soup! Least favourite was their chicken karaage, I found it wasn't flavourful enough, so I had to dip it in other sauces.
Next time I'd LOVE to try their beef tongue, pork kakuni bowl and Eel stone hitsuma-bushi! So yes, I will definitely be back!
