Buttermilk Fine Waffles
Hi, I'm Esther and I really love waffles. I mean pancakes are great, but waffles... with fresh cream, fruit and real maple syrup + a side of bacon + a fresh glass of orange juice ... yeah I can happily start my day with that combo... Not that Buttermilk offers me bacon, but village ice cream with all its fixing's isn't too far off from my ideal waffle happy place.
I found out about @Buttermilkyyc's opening when I was enjoying my regular Village visits about 2 months ago. Their pre-promotion was shared through cute little post cards with a handful of international dialects at the store front of Village.
During the opening week, it took me 3 tries to finally get myself through the doors without them closing early or being out of supplies to make more! (Talk about a grand opening!)
Here below is an overview of their current menu, they offer only waffles which makes ordering simple, (unless you're like me, you enjoy trying everything at least once!)
So far I've checked off the following:
Buttermilk Classic: Buttery ... pretty sure it was a decent amount of butter + maple syrup. It was quite satisfying paired with orange juice.
Lemon: Lemon curd + crumbled goat cheese (I don't really fancy goat cheese, but yaa'l alright because I got a thing for lemon curd!)
Rachels Cinnamon Bun: Sweet guilty pleasure is how I can describe this one; it's pretty much everything you could ask for when you think of cinnamon bun. (a tad too sweet for me, however anything paired with tea or coffee makes sweet things the best!)
Fruit: lots of fruit + whipped cream and strawberry syrup**
Village: Vanilla ice cream, melted chocolate + toffee whipped cream and pecans**
(This is pretty much my GO TO. Everything on this waffle is just so perfect I love the flavour play, from the fluffy waffle, crunchy pecans to the cold ice cream and creamy whip... it's kind of perfect to me ;D)
**my favourite if you haven't noticed the photos on this post by now.
H.A.M: lots of cheese and ham :D
(A mix of sweet, fluffy and savoury fun... not bad not bad.)
Arugula: A delicious salad on top of a fluffy waffle
(Ahh-ru-gu-laaa! I personally wouldn't get this myself again since... goat cheese, but besides that it's pretty yummy, everything was well balanced and I'm surprised how well waffles + salad actually go together, unfortunately I couldn't really taste any of the chili oil or honey.)
A really cool thing about Village + Buttermilk is the fact that they open relatively early and closes at 10pm and 11pm on weekends - offering Calgary a chance to indulge in a different type of sweet whenever the mood strikes.
In the last two months I've came back a handful of times and I've yet to be disappointed; and I'm quite happy that Calgary finally has a decent place specializing in waffles! The price is between $9-10 which for one waffle may seem a bit much, however I really do enjoy the friendly staff and atmosphere Buttermilk brings, so yes I'll be back for more! (Added no dishes for me is always a yay!)
Oh PS: Before you leave, pay attention to the walls by the washroom. They're currently supporting a local artist Kaci Lynne (@kacilynneart)with her written art series called Sad Girl. For anyone who understands and has been through love, loss and letting go - I think you'll appreciate the sentiments. Thumbs up for Buttermilk in supporting local artists! I hope to see other work features in the near future!
